Jeremiah On G-d’s Sovereignty

You are being taught that satan is against G-d, and is an opposing power.

Truth is, that is not at all true.

From minor, global and universal affairs G-d is in complete full control of everything.

Read Isaiah 45:7 if you are in doubt, before you read this long chapter of Jeremiah before its last.

“Babylon’s Downfall”

Thus said Hashem: Behold, I am stirring up a spirit of destruction against Babylonia and against the inhabitants of Leb-kamal.
51:1
For Israel is not widowed, [nor is] Judah, from his God, Hashem, Master of Legions, for the [Chaldean] land is full of guilt toward the Holy One of Israel.
:5
Flee from the midst of Babylonia; everyone save his soul; do not be annihilated for their sin. For it is a time of vengeance for Hashem; He is paying [Babylonia] her due.
:6
Hashem has brought out our [deeds of] righteousness; come let us relate in Zion the action of Hashem our God.
:10
Prepare the arrows, fill the quivers; for Hashem has stirred up the spirit of the kings of Medea, for His thoughts are directed against Babylonia, to destroy it; for it is the vengeance of Hashem, vengeance for His Sanctuary.
:11
He made the earth with His might, He established the world with His wisdom, and with His understanding spread out the heavens.
:15
At the sound of His placement of a multitude of water in the heavens, He raised clouds from the end of the earth; He made lightning bolts for the rain and brings forth wind from His treasuries.
:16
Every man is bereft of wisdom, every smith is shamed by [his] graven image, for his molten idol is false, and there is no life in it.
:17
They are vanity, the work of deception; when they are called to account, they shall perish.
:18
Unlike these is the Portion of Jacob, for He is the Molder of everything, and [Israel] is the tribe of His heritage; His Name is Hashem, Master of Legions.
:19
You [Babylonia] were a mallet for Me, a tool of war; I smashed nations through you and destroyed kingdoms through you.
:20
Now I shall repay to Babylonia and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they did in Zion before your eyes — the word of Hashem.
:24
During their drunkenness I will spoil their drinking parties; I will intoxicate them so that they become merry; they will sleep an eternal sleep and never awaken — the word of Hashem.
:39
Therefore, behold, days are coming when I will deal with the graven idols of Babylonia, and its entire land will be ashamed; and all its slain will fall in its midst.
:47
Heaven and earth and all that is in them will rejoice over Babylonia, for the plunderers will come to it from the north — the word of Hashem —
:48
O survivors of the sword — go forth, do not stand still; remember Hashem from the distance and let Jerusalem come up in your hearts!
:50
Therefore, behold, days are coming — the word of Hashem — when I will attend to their graven idols, and in all their land the mortally wounded will groan.
:52
For Hashem is plundering Babylonia and He will end the loud sound from it; …
:55
… for Hashem is a God of retribution; He will surely exact recompense.
:56
Jeremiah wrote down all the misfortunes that were to come upon Babylonia in one book, all these prophecies that are written about Babylonia;
:60

1 So said the Lord: Behold I arouse against Babylon and against the inhabitants of Leb-kamai, the desire of a destroyer.
2 And I will send against Babylon foreigners and they shall scatter her and empty her land, for they were against her all around on the day of evil.
3 To [wherever I say], the archer shall bend his bow, and he shall not be healed with his coat of mail, and have no pity on her youths, destroy all her host.
4 And they shall fall slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and those thrust through in her streets.
5 For Israel is not widowed, neither is Judah [widowed] from his God, the Lord of Hosts, for their land is full of guilt, from the Holy One of Israel.
6 Flee from within Babylon and each one save his life, be not cut off in her iniquity; for it is the time of the Lord’s vengeance; He is paying her a recompense.
7 Babylon is a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, it intoxicates all the earth; nations have drunk of her wine, therefore, nations are mad.
8 Suddenly, Babylon has fallen and has been broken; wail over her, take balm for her pain, perhaps she may be healed.
9 “We treated Babylon, but she was not cured. Leave her and let us go each one to his own land, for her judgment has touched the sky and has been raised to the heavens.”
10 “The Lord has brought out our merits; come and let us tell in Zion the deed of the Lord our God.”
11 Polish the arrows, fill the quivers; the Lord has aroused the desire of the kings of Media, for His aim is to destroy her, for the Lord’s vengeance is the vegeance of His Temple.
12 On the walls of Babylon raise a standard, strengthen the watch, station sentries, prepare the ambushes, for the Lord both planned and did what He had spoken concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 You, who dwell by many waters, abundant in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your violence.
14 The Lord of Hosts has sworn by Himself; I have indeed filled you with men as with locusts, and they shall raise a battle-cry against you.
15 He Who has made the earth with His strength, He prepared the world by His wisdom, and with His understanding He stretched out the heavens.
16 At the sound of His giving a multitude of waters in the heaven, He brought up clouds from the end of the earth, He made lightning for the rain, and He took wind out of His treasuries.
17 Every man is brutish without knowledge; every smith is put to shame by his graven image, for his molten images are false, without spirit in them.
18 They are vanity, a work of delusion; at the time of their visitation, they shall perish.
19 Not like these is Jacob’s portion, for He is the One Who formed everything, and the tribe of His inheritance; the Lord of Hosts is His name.
20 You are for Me a shatterer, yea weapons of war, and with you I would shatter nations, and with you I would destroy kingdoms.
21 And with you I would shatter a horse and his rider, and with you I would shatter a chariot and its rider.
22 And with you I would shatter man and woman, and with you I would shatter elder and youth, and with you I would shatter young man and virgin.
23 And with you I would shatter a shepherd and his flock, and with you I would shatter a farmer and his team, and with you I would shatter governors and officers.
24 And I will recompense Babylon and all the inhabitants of [the land of] the Chaldeans for all their evil that they committed in Zion before your eyes, says the Lord.
25 Behold I am against you, O destroying mountain, says the Lord, who destroys all the earth, and I will stretch out My hand upon you and roll you down from the rocks and make you a burnt mountain.
26 And they shall take from you neither a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations, for you shall be desolate forever, says the Lord.
27 Raise up a standard in the land, sound a shofar among the nations, prepare nations against her, gather against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz; appoint over her a marshal, bring up horses like bristling locusts.
28 Prepare nations against her, the kings of Media, her governors, and all her officers, and all the land of his rule.
29 And the earth quaked and was in pain for the plans of the Lord rose upon Babylon to make the land of Babylon desolate without an inhabitant.
30 The mighty men of Babylon ceased to wage war, they dwelt in the fortresses, their might has failed, they have become like women; her dwellings were ignited, her bars broken.
31 One courier runs to meet another courier, and one herald to meet another herald, to tell the king of Babylon that his city has been taken from the end,
32 and the fords have been seized, and the reeds have been burnt with fire, and the warriors have been frightened.
33 For so said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a granary at the time it is threshed. A little more time and the time of harvest shall come to her.
34 Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, has devoured me, he has crushed me; yea he has placed me as an empty vessel; he has swallowed me like a sea monster, he has filled his belly with my delicacies; he has rinsed me out.
35 “May the plundering done me and my food be upon Babylon!” says the dweller of Zion, “and my blood upon the dwellers of [the land of] the Chaldeans!” says Jerusalem.
36 Therefore, so said the Lord: Behold I plead your cause, and I avenge your vengeance, and I will dry up her sea and dry up her fountain.
37 And Babylon shall become heaps, a den of jackals, a desolation and a hissing without an inhabitant.
38 Together they roar like young lions, they growl like lion cubs.
39 In their heat I will place their wine feasts, and I will make them drunk in order that they become joyful, and sleep a perpetual sleep and not awaken, says the Lord.
40 I will lower them like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he-goats.
41 How was Sheshach taken and the praise of all the earth seized? How did Babylon become an astonishment among the nations?
42 The sea has ascended upon Babylon; with the multitude of its waves it has been covered.
43 Her cities became desolate, a dry land and a desert, a land where no man dwells, neither does any man pass through them.
44 And I will visit retribution on Bel in Babylon, and I will take what he has swallowed out of his mouth, and nations shall no longer stream to him: even the wall of Babylon has fallen.
45 Go out of its midst, My people, and each one save his life, from the burning wrath of the Lord.
46 And lest your heart be faint and you fear because of the rumor that is heard in the land, for a rumor shall come one year, and after it in a year a rumor, and violence in the land, and one ruler upon another ruler.
47 Therefore, behold days are coming, and I will visit retribution on the graven images of Babylon, and all her land shall be shamed, and all her slain shall fall in her midst.
48 And heaven and earth and all that is in them shall sing for joy, for spoilers shall come upon her from the north, says the Lord.
49 As Babylon [caused] the slain of Israel to fall, so in Babylon shall fall the slain of all the land.
50 Fugitives from the sword, go, do not stand still! Remember the Lord from the distant past, and let Jerusalem enter your mind.
51 “We are ashamed for we have heard reproach, embarrassment has covered our faces, for strangers have come upon the sanctuaries of the house of the Lord.”
52 Therefore, behold days are coming, says the Lord, and I will visit retribution upon her graven images and throughout her land the mortally wounded shall groan.
53 Should Babylon ascend to heaven and should she fortify the height of her strength, from Me shall spoilers come upon her, says the Lord.
54 Hark! A cry from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans.
55 For the Lord is spoiling Babylon and He has put an end to her great din, and their waves roared like many waters, the stirring of their voice was uttered.
56 For a spoiler has come upon her, yea upon Babylon, and her mighty men have been seized, their bows have been broken, for the Lord is a God of recompenses, He shall surely requite.
57 And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men, her governors and her mighty men, and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not awaken, says the King, the Lord of Hosts is His Name.
58 So said the Lord of Hosts: The broad walls of Babylon shall be overthrown and her lofty gates shall be burnt with fire, and peoples shall labor for much futility, and kingdoms in much fire, and they shall be weary.
59 The word that Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah the son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign, and Seraiah was the prince of tribute.
60 And Jeremiah wrote all the evil that would befall Babylon in one scroll, all these words that are written concerning Babylon.
61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you come to Babylon, you shall see and read all these words.
62 And you shall say, ‘O Lord, You have spoken concerning this place to cut it off, that it have no inhabitant, either man or beast, but it shall be forever desolate.’
63 And it shall come to pass that when you finish reading this scroll, you shall tie a stone to it and cast it into the Euphrates.
64 And you shall say, ‘So shall Babylon sink and not rise, because of the evil that I bring upon her, and they shall weary.” Until here are the words of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah (Yirmiyahu in Hebrew)

Opposed by false prophets.

Ingratitude and unfaithfulness caused Israel’s downfall that Jeremiah witnessed.

Idolatry is always the end-result of disobedience against G-d.
