JESUS: Scrutinized III

You deliver us like sheep to be eaten and have scattered us among the nations;Because for Your sake we are killed all the time, we are considered as sheep for slaughter.

Tehillim (Psalm) 44:12 & 23 (vs. 11 & 22 in CB)

Jesus, The Suffering Servant?

1 Who would have believed our report, and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?
2 And he came up like a sapling before it, and like a root from dry ground, he had neither form nor comeliness; and we saw him that he had no appearance. Now shall we desire him?
3 Despised and rejected by men, a man of pains and accustomed to illness, and as one who hides his face from us, despised and we held him of no account.
4 Indeed, he bore our illnesses, and our pains-he carried them, yet we accounted him as plagued, smitten by God and oppressed.
5 But he was pained because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; the chastisement of our welfare was upon him, and with his wound we were healed.
6 We all went astray like sheep, we have turned, each one on his way, and the Lord accepted his prayers for the iniquity of all of us.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he would not open his mouth; like a lamb to the slaughter he would be brought, and like a ewe that is mute before her shearers, and he would not open his mouth.
8 From imprisonment and from judgment he is taken, and his generation who shall tell? For he was cut off from the land of the living; because of the transgression of my people, a plague befell them.
9 And he gave his grave to the wicked, and to the wealthy with his kinds of death, because he committed no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
10 And the Lord wished to crush him, He made him ill; if his soul makes itself restitution, he shall see children, he shall prolong his days, and God’s purpose shall prosper in his hand.
11 From the toil of his soul he would see, he would be satisfied; with his knowledge My servant would vindicate the just for many, and their iniquities he would bear.
12 Therefore, I will allot him a portion in public, and with the strong he shall share plunder, because he poured out his soul to death, and with transgressors he was counted; and he bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors.

Or It Is:

Israel - Jacob - Jeshurun

But you, O Israel, My servant, Jacob, you whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham who loved Me —

you whom I shall grasp from the ends of the earth and shall summon from among its noblemen, and to whom I shall say, ‘You are My servant’ — I have chosen you and not rejected you.

Behold My servant, whom I shall uphold; My chosen one, whom My soul desired; I have placed My spirit upon him so he can bring forth justice to the nations.

Who is blind but My servant and deaf as My messenger whom I send? Who is blind like the perfected man? Blind like the servant of Hashem?

You are My witnesses — the word of Hashem — and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you will know and believe in My, and understand that I am He; before Me nothing was created by a god nor will there be after Me!

But hear now, Jacob, My servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen!

Thus said Hashem Who made you and fashioned you from the womb, Who will help you: Fear not, My servant Jacob and Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

Remember these things, Jacob and Israel, for you are My servant: I fashioned you to be My servant; Israel, do not forget Me!

Who confirms the words of His servant, and fulfills the counsel of His messengers; Who says of Jerusalem, ‘It shall be settled,’ and of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built up, and I will rebuild its ruins’;

for the sake of My servant Jacob and Israel, My chosen one; I have proclaimed you by name; I dubbed you, though you did not know Me.

Go forth from Babylonia; hurry from Chaldea. With glad song relate, announce this; bring forth [the message] to the ends of the earth; say, ‘Hashem has redeemed His servant Jacob.’

He said to me: “You are My servant, Israel, in whom I take glory.”

And now Hashem, Who formed me from the belly to be a servant to Him; so I was honored in God’s eyes and my God was my strength.

He said: It is insufficient that you be a servant for Me [only] to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the ruins of Israel; I will make you a light for the nations, so that My salvation may extend to the ends of the earth.

Who among you fears Hashem, listening to the voice of His servant? Though he may have walked in darkness with no light for himself, let him trust in the Name of Hashem, and rely upon his God.

Behold, My servant will succeed; he will be exalted and become high and exceedingly lofty.

From his very own toil he will see and be satisfied. With his knowledge My servant, the righteous one, will make multitudes righteous; it is their iniquities that he will carry.

Any weapon sharpened against you will not succeed, and my tongue, that will rise against you in judgment, you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Hashem, and their righteousness from Me — the word of Hashem.

And the foreigners who join themselves to Hashem to serve Him and to love the Name of Hashem to become servants unto Him, all who guard the Sabbath against desecration, and grasp My covenant tightly —

Why, Hashem, do You let us stray from Your paths, letting our heart become hardened from fearing You? Return [to us] for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage!

Thus said Hashem: Just as when the wine exists in a cluster, and someone says, ‘Do not destroy it, for there is blessing within it,’ so will I do for My servants, not to destroy everything.

I will bring forth offspring from Jacob, and from Judah the heir of My mountains; My chosen ones will inherit it and My servants will dwell there.

Therefore, thus said my Lord, Hashem/Elohim: Behold, My servants will will eat and you will starve; behold, My servants will drink and you will thirst; behold, My servants will rejoice and you will be ashamed;

behold, My servants will exult from good-heartedness, and you will cry out from pain of heart and wail from a broken spirit.

You will leave your name as an oath for My chosen ones, and the Lord, Hashem/Elohim, will put you to death; but He will call His servants a different name.

You will see and your heart will exult, and your bones will flourish like grass; the hand of Hashem will be known to His servants, and He will show anger to His enemies.

1 For the leader. Of the Korahites. A maskil.
2 We have heard, O God, our fathers have told us the deeds You performed in their time, in days of old.
3 With Your hand You planted them, displacing nations; You brought misfortune on peoples, and drove them out.
4 It was not by their sword that they took the land, their arm did not give them victory, but Your right hand, Your arm, and Your goodwill, for You favored them.
5 You are my king, O God; decree victories for Jacob!
6 Through You we gore our foes; by Your name we trample our adversaries;
7 I do not trust in my bow; it is not my sword that gives me victory;
8 You give us victory over our foes; You thwart those who hate us.
9 In God we glory at all times, and praise Your name unceasingly.Selah.
10 Yet You have rejected and disgraced us; You do not go with our armies.
11 You make us retreat before our foe; our enemies plunder us at will.
12 You let them devour us like sheep; You disperse us among the nations.
13 You sell Your people for no fortune, You set no high price on them.
14 You make us the butt of our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
15 You make us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
16 I am always aware of my disgrace; I am wholly covered with shame
17 at the sound of taunting revilers, in the presence of the vengeful foe.
18 All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten You, or been false to Your covenant.
19 Our hearts have not gone astray, nor have our feet swerved from Your path,
20 though You cast us, crushed, to where the sea monster is, and covered us over with deepest darkness.
21 If we forgot the name of our God and spread forth our hands to a foreign god,
22 God would surely search it out, for He knows the secrets of the heart.
23 It is for Your sake that we are slain all day long, that we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
24 Rouse Yourself; why do You sleep, O Lord? Awaken, do not reject us forever!
25 Why do You hide Your face, ignoring our affliction and distress?
26 We lie prostrate in the dust; our body clings to the ground.
27 Arise and help us, redeem us, as befits Your faithfulness.
