Chapter 1

Zephaniah on G-d’s Direct Threat to You Who Ignore G-d’s Direct Word through His Servants the Prophets

Aimed to those who believe in G-d, yet worship Jesus.

Also, to those who do not care at all about G-d. Never interested in spiritual or heavenly things.

“A Day Of Destruction”

The word of Hashem that came to Zephaniah, son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah:
1:1
I will utterly destroy everything from upon the face of the land — the word of Hashem.
1:2
… and I will cut off from this place any remnant of the Baal and the memory of the ministers with the priests;
:4
and those who prostrate themselves on the roofs to the heavenly host, and those who bow down and swear to Hashem and [then] swear by their king,
:5
and those who have turned back from following Hashem and those who have not sought Hashem nor inquired after Him.
:6
Be silent before the Lord Hashem/Elohim, for the day of Hashem is near! For Hashem has prepared a slaughter; He has invited His guest.
:7
And I will deal with all those who leap over the threshold on that day, [and with] those who fill the houses of their masters with injustice and deceit.
:9
It will be at that time that I will search Jerusalem with candles and I will deal with the men who are settled on their lees, who say in their heart, ‘Hashem will not do good, and will not do evil.’
:12
The great day of Hashem is near, it is near and hastens greatly, the sound of the day of Hashem, when the mighty warrior cries out bitterly.
:14
A day of fury is that day, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and blackness, a day of cloud and thick cloud,
:15
I will lay siege against the people, and they will go about like the blind for they have sinned against Hashem. Their blood will be spilled out like dust and their flesh like dung.
:17
Even their silver, even their gold will not be able to rescue them on the day of Hashem’s fury; in the fire of His zeal the entire land will be consumed; for He will make an end, and abrupt one, of all the inhabitants of the land.
:18

1 The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah.
2 I will totally destroy everything from off the face of the earth, says the Lord.
3 I will totally destroy man and beast; I will totally destroy the fowl of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, and the stumbling blocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from the face of the earth, says the Lord.
4 And I will stretch out My hand over Judah and over all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal, the name of the idolatrous priests with the ancillary priests,
5 and those who prostrate themselves on the roofs to the host of the heavens, and those who prostrate themselves who swear by the Lord and swear by their king,
6 and those who turn away from following the Lord, and those who did not seek the Lord nor inquire after Him.
7 Be silent before the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is near. For the Lord has prepared a slaughter; He has invited His guests.
8 And it shall be on the day of the Lord’s slaughter, that I will visit upon the princes, and upon the king’s sons, and upon all those who wear gentile garb.
9 And I will visit upon everyone who leaps over the threshold [a Philistine idolatrous practice], [and] those who fill the houses of their masters with violence and deceit.
10 And it shall come to pass on that day, says the Lord; A sound of a cry from the fish gate, and a wail from the second gate, and great destruction from the hills.
11 Wail, O you inhabitants of Maktesh, for the entire people of Canaan is cut off; all those laden with silver have been cut off.
12 And it shall come to pass on that day, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and I will visit upon the men who are settled on their lees, who say in their heart, “The Lord shall do neither good nor harm.”
13 And their wealth shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation, and they shall build houses and not dwell in them, and plant vineyards and not drink their wine.
14 The great day of the Lord is near; it is near and hastens greatly, the sound of the day of the Lord, wherein the mighty man cries bitterly.
15 That day is a day of wrath; a day of trouble and distress; a day of ruin and desolation; a day of darkness and gloom; a day of clouds and thick darkness;
16 a day of shofar and alarm against the fortified cities and against the high towers.
17 And I will bring distress upon men, and they shall walk like the blind, for they have sinned against the Lord. And their blood shall be shed like dust, and their flesh like dung.
18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath. And with the fire of His passion the entire land shall be consumed; for an end, yea, a sudden end, He shall make of all the inhabitants of the land.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
