Chronicles On David As King
The crowning of David as king is in accordance with G-d’s command through Samuel. Thus, Hashem made him great.
“King David”
All of Israel gathered together to David in Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.
11:1
… and Hashem your God has said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel and you shall be ruler over My people Israel.’”
11:2
… They anointed David as king of Israel, in accordance with the word of Hashem through Samuel.
11:3
David grew continuously greater, and Hashem, Master of Legions, was with him.
:9
These are the chief warriors of David, who strove for him in his kingship, along with all of Israel, to crown him, in accordance with the word of Hashem concerning Israel.
:10
… and Hashem caused a great salvation.
:14
… “If only someone could give me water to drink from the well of Beth-lehem, which is in the city gate!”
:17
But David refused to drink it, and he poured it out unto Hashem.
:18
He said, “Far be it from me before my God to do this! Shall I drink [what is tantamount to] the blood of these men, by their lives? …
:19
1 And all Israel gathered to David to Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.
2 Also in times past, also when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought [them in], and the Lord your God said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be a ruler over My people Israel.’ “
3 And all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron, and David made with them a covenant in Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David as king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Samuel.
4 And David and all of Israel went to Jerusalem, that is Jebus, and there were the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land.
5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not come here,” and David captured the citadel of Zion, that is the City of David.
6 And David said, “Whoever smites the Jebusites first will be a chief and an officer,” and Joab the son of Zeruiah ascended first and became a chief.
7 And David dwelt in the citadel; therefore they called it the City of David.
8 And he built the city from around, from the Millo until the surrounding area, and Joab restored the rest of the city.
9 And David waxed constantly greater, and the Lord of Hosts was with him.
10 And these are the chiefs of David’s mighty men who held strongly with him in his kingdom with all Israel to crown him-according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel.
11 And these are the number of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam the son of Hachmoni, the head of the mighty men; he stirred his spear on three hundred slain at one time.
12 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite; he was among the three mighty men.
13 He was with David in Pas-Dammim, and the Philistines gathered there for war, and the plot of ground was full of barley, and the people fled from before the Philistines.
14 And they stationed themselves in the midst of the plot and saved it and smote the Philistines, and the Lord performed a great salvation.
15 And three of the thirty descended upon the rock to David, to the cave of Adullam, and the Philistine camp was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.
16 Now David was then in the stronghold, and a Philistine governor was then in Bethlehem.
17 And David experienced a craving and said, “If only someone would give me to drink water from the cistern of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”
18 And the three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the cistern of Bethlehem, which is by the gate, carried and brought [it] to David, but he was unwilling to drink it, and he poured it out as a libation to the Lord.
19 And he said, “Far be it from me from my God from doing this; shall I drink the blood of these men who went in jeopardy of their lives, for they brought it with their lives,” and he was unwilling to drink it. The three mighty men performed these [feats].
20 And Abshai, the brother of Joab was the chief of the three, and he lifted his spear on three hundred slain, and he had a name among the three.
21 Of the three, he was honored like two, and he was their chief, but to the three he did not come.
22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a valiant man, who accomplished many feats, from Kabzeel-he smote the two mighty men of Moab, and he descended and smote the lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.
23 And he smote an Egyptian man, a man of great stature of five cubits, and in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weavers’ beam, and he went down to him with a rod, and he robbed the Egyptian of the spear and slew him with his spear.
24 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada performed these [feats], and he had a name among the three mighty men.
25 Of the thirty, he was the most honored, but to the three he did not come, and David appointed him over his guard.
26 And the mighty warriors were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem.
