Chapter 4

Nehemiah Prays Before Taking Action Against Their Enemies To Their Defense

The people battle and protect themselves with full confidence in Hashem.

They continue to build defending themselves with weapons as they build.

“Jerusalem’s Enemies”

“Reliance In G-d Is Their Defense”

“Workers And Warriors”

So they all banded together to come and do battle in Jerusalem, and to bring ruin upon it.
4:2
So we prayed to our God, and we set up a guard over [the workers], by day and by night against them.
4:3
… “Do not fear them! Remember the great and awesome Lord, and fight for your brothers, your sons and daughters, your wives and your homes!”
:8
It happened from that day onward, that half of my youths did the work and half of them held the spears, the shields and the bows, and the armor, and the officers backed the entire House of Judah.
:10
… Our God will fight for us!”
14
Thus, the night was a watch for us and the day was [for] work.
:16

1 Now it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabs, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the wall of Jerusalem was repaired, that the people who were exposed had commenced to be closed in, that they became very angered.
2 And they all banded together to come to wage war against Jerusalem and to wreak destruction therein.
3 And we prayed to our God, and we stationed a watch over them day and night because of them.
4 And Judea said, “The porter’s strength has failed, and there is much earth, and we cannot build the wall.”
5 And our adversaries said, “They will not know and they will not see until we come into their midst, and we shall slay them and stop the work.”
6 Now it came to pass when the Jews who dwelt beside them came, that they said to us ten times, “From all the places that you shall return upon us.”
7 So I stationed [mighty men] from below the place, from behind the wall on the bare rocks, and I stationed the people according to families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
8 And I saw, and I arose, and I said to the nobles and to the prefects and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them; remember the great and awesome Lord, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your households.”
9 And it came to pass when our enemies heard that it had become known to us, that God had frustrated their counsel, that we all returned to the wall, each one to his work.
10 And it was from that day on, half of my youths did work and half of them held spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail, and the rulers were behind the entire House of Judah.
11 The builders of the wall and the carriers of the loads were loading, with one hand doing the work and one holding the sword.
12 And the builders, each one with his sword bound to his waist, and [they were] building, and the one who sounded the shofar was beside me.
13 And I said to the nobles and to the prefects and to the rest of the people, “There is much work, and [it is] widespread, and we are separated on the wall, one far from the other.
14 In the place that you will hear the sound of the shofar, there you shall gather to us; our God will fight for us.”
15 And we were doing work, and half of them were holding spears from the rise of dawn until the emergence of the stars.
16 Also at that time I said to the people, “Let each man and his youth lodge in the midst of Jerusalem, and the night will be for our watch and the day for work.”
17 And I, and my brothers, and my youths, and the men of the watch who followed me-we did not take off our clothes; no man took it even to the water.

Ruth is one of the greatest converts who ever lived.
Though not a lengthy book, Ruth is filled with significant story in the Hebrew Bible that tell the tale of a foreign woman, who later becomes an ancestor of King David.
Lamentations is a collection of five powerful reflections mourning the destruction of the first Temple and the exile of the Jewish people from Jerusalem.

The book is attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, who have written it in vivid, anguished language to express his own grief as well as that of the Jewish community as a whole.

Bible reading in the form of Scripture in pictures can have a profound impact on those who may have never read a chapter in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Viewing pivotal verses in a visual context can deepen one’s understanding of the text and provide a unique perspective. The images may help to illustrate important themes and messages that may not have been as easily grasped through standard reading. Additionally, this method can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with traditional reading methods or for those who are more visually inclined. The power of visual storytelling has been utilized for centuries, and when paired with the timeless words of Scripture, it has the potential to bring new life and meaning to the ancient text. Ultimately, whatever method one chooses to engage with the Bible, the most important thing is to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word, and to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way.
